Chicken Coups Plan

I remember growing up with chickens. We had them in the backyard, our neighbours had them in the backyard. And until i started taking care of chickens i thought a chicken coup was a few bits of tin for the roof, some chicken wire and recycled wood put together as good as you can.

But I have since found out that if you don't do a good job on the old chicken coups then you may find it a little harder than expected to taking care of your chickens.

For instance, you have to make it easy to clean out the coup every second or third day if you don't want rats or mice milling around.

YOu want to keep it clean too because then your flock is less likely to catch any of the diseases chickens get.

You need to give you chickens space the recommend is 4 square feet plus have plenty of perches. I made some from old broom handles and tree branches. Cheap n cheerful but they work and that is them main thing.

Think of the weather conditions in your area because you don't want a draughty chicken house cause your chickens can catch colds on the winter. In the hot periods your flock needs cool air and good ventilation.

You don't have to purchase a chicken coup to have a successful chicken pen, you really just need to think about what will suit you for access and give your birds enough space to be happy.

I have seen some pretty fancy ideas for chicken coups and if you put on your thinking caps and create side doors and a hinged roof. This is great for maitenance or catching chickens. You can make your chicken coup really easy to clean and even scrape out the chicken manure straight to your wheel barrow.

It  just takes a bit of creative thinkg and planning before you actually start making your chicken coup...Do some scketches and drawings. Try and give each hen her own nesting box you will get more egss this way and give them plenty for room to move.
